AIRBNB IRELAND CLAIMS VICTORY OVER COALITION, LABOR & RESIDENTS IN NSW ELECTIONS

Today, Airbnb landlords in NSW received an email advising: “regardless of which major party forms government in NSW after this Saturday’s election, your choice to responsibly share your home will be protected.” The (pictured) summary was provided, “Sent with ♥from Airbnb Ireland, The Watermarque Building, South Lotts Road, Ringsend, Dublin 4, VAT:9827384L” .

NSW Ministers and Shadow Ministers did not respond to our questions regarding their plans to set aside the rights of residential homeowners and accredited accommodation providers. Minister Matthew Kean’s correspondence to Airbnb can be found here. Shadow Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Yasmin Catley MP’s response to Airbnb is here.

One must remember that the NSW Government’s DestinationNSW works in partnership with Expedia/Stayz and “a range of Tourism and Trade Partners”, including but certainly not limited to Airbnb and Booking.com. Our Government facilitates the use of housing as unaccredited hotels/serviced apartments. With regards to issues of compliance with legislation and other regulatory requirements, “DestinationNSW does not carry out regulatory functions”.

West Australian residents write that they too are very angry that Airbnb’s US and Canadian landlords are astroturfing their State Politicians with demands to permit short-term rentals in all residential homes across our western State.

In NSW, all that is left to be said is that, as far as our housing rights and residential title deeds are concerned, it seems they are about to be trashed, no matter who wins this weekend’s State Elections.
